It was during a visit to the cleaning work of the Forest Path linking Achada do Vigário to the Cabeço das Voltas Miradouro that the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources, Susana Prada, said that forest fire prevention is a continuous work.
The secretary added that, at this time, 7,500 meters of forest path is being benefited in the parish of São Jorge, and “every year a total of 150 km is cleaned.”
Regarding the work begun today, he clarified that the “intervention has the objective of protecting people and goods with the improvement of the conditions of surveillance and fire fighting.”
Withdrawal of highly combustible invasive plants, compartmentalization of forest space, creation of firebreaks, improved access to surveillance and fire fighting vehicles and improved access to the Cabeço das Voltas Surveillance Tower, which is being recovered, is purpose of operations, he concluded.
