The Regional Government’s president, Miguel Albuquerque, will preside tomorrow, July 3, to the ceremony of delivery of the Green Key awards, to be held at 5 pm at the Jardins das Madalenas in Funchal.
The ‘Green Key’ award is an international symbol that promotes sustainable tourism. At present, the program is present in 57 countries. Around 2,900 tourist establishments in the world were recognized with the distinction in the 2018 edition.
In 2018, the Green Key Program in Portugal recognized with its certification of 127 establishments, 34 more than in 2017, representing a relative growth of 37% over last year.
The highlight is Madeira, which has 48 winners this year, more than a third of the total.
The North and Center regions each have 21 Green Key establishments. Lisbon and Vale do Tejo have 14 establishments, while the Algarve and the Azores each have 10 chosen establishments. In 2018, the Alentejo region awarded three ‘Green Key’ establishments.
Portugal, in 2018, reached eighth place among the 57 countries, soon after Denmark, which has 140 award-winning establishments, in a list led by the Netherlands with 681 Green Key establishments.
In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the number of award-winning hotels, with the highlight being 2018, with 48 award-winning establishments.
